Question: HI! I've started doing cardio karate. I read that you can burn 800 calories an hour. I'm going four times a week. I eat around 1,500 calories a day. I am 148 pounds and I'm 5 feet 4 inches. I've changed my eating habits over the past few months. I now try to only eat healthy, but I do splurge maybe once a week. I am trying to lose about 20 pounds before my husband's Christmas party. Do you think I'll make it? Can you really burn 800 calories an hour with cardio? Thanks! M.R.
Answer: Hi M.R., I've never done cardio karate. It's possible to burn 800 calories per hour, but that number is probably based on someone not necessarily your size working out at maximum intensity. The amount of calories you burn is based on your size, plus the intensity of the workout. Imagine running 8 miles in an hour -- that's fast! That's a good estimation as to an activity that would burn 800 calories for someone your size. So it's possible you burn that much during a cardio karate class, but it's not likely for your frame. I think your goal of losing 20 pounds before the Christmas party is too high. Depending on when the party is in December, you have 4 to 6 weeks from the time of your letter to lose weight. Two pounds per week is a good goal, but even better is your commitment to changing your habits permanently. Setting the date of the party is good for motivation, but keep setting goals after that and you'll always be progressing.
