Exercise with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Question: Hi Jana, Do you ever advise people with Rheumatoid Arthritis about nutrition and exercise? Because of the RA, I do have limits as far as exercise goes and in addition, I take prednisone, which has a common side effect of increasing one's appetite? How do you help people like me face these kinds of challenges? Rose

Answer: Hi Rose, I would recommend aquatic activities, which take a lot of stress off your joints, and mobility exercises supervised by a physical therapist. If you're having a flare-up, rest that day. On the nutrition side, watch your food intake, making sure to cut back on unnecessary calories, but it's just as important to get enough to eat also -- you don't want to miss out on important nutrients that can help keep flare-ups at bay.
