Heart Rate and Exercise Intensity

Question: Since you have so much information on predicting heart rate max and training intensity, do you know the reference for 220-age - the original study? Carrie

Answer: Carrie, The age-adjusted heart rate maximum formula of taking 220 minus your age is based on two facts: one, that 220 beats per minute is the average heart rate of newborn babies; and two, that the average person's maximum heart rate drops by about one beat per minute per year. I'm not sure who originally developed the formula. The earliest reference to it I can find is as part of the Karvonen formula.
