How to Gain Weight Without Drinking Protein

Question: Hello! :) I want to thank you very much for responding to my requests! I just have one more question, I have a 14 year old son, 6'2" tall and very skinny. He wants to start taking those shakes or power drinks to gain weight and muscles. I have taken a look at some of these and because of the high sugar intake I said no for now! I'm not an expert on this matter but it just looks too unhealthy for a 14-year-old or anyone to take in sooo much sugar. What do you suggest for a 14-year-old who wants some volume to his body? Thanks, Teresa

Answer: Hi! One good way to gain weight is to eat several (5 - 6) meals per day. Lots of potatoes (skins included), whole grain pastas and breads, rice, beans, peanut butter sandwiches, oatmeal, dried fruits, whole wheat muffins, fruit juices and fruit smoothies. Weight gaining drinks are also fine if you don't depend solely on them for extra calories. Limit him to one drink per day. High-calorie drinks won't help him build muscle though -- he has to strength train for that. This will help him build lean mass, not fat. He can gain 1 to 1.5 pounds per week through balanced weight training. Good luck!
