Question: When I work out I gain muscle very quickly which is disappointing since my goal is to lose 15 pounds and slim my inner and outer thighs and my love handles. What would be the best type of exercise for these problem areas? Also, what is the best amount of workout time for a woman of 29 to accomplish a good heart rate level? Thank you Desiree
Answer: Desiree, The best way to slim your inner and outer thighs (and any other problem areas) is to burn fat through cardiovascular exercise. You can't "spot reduce" in any area. Your body burns fat from all over your body as you lose weight. Cut back on how much you eat -- that's actually the most important part. Regarding heart rate level, if you don't have a heart rate monitor, you can use the method of perceived exertion. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being all-out running from a rabid dog, and 1 being sleeping, you should aim for about 7. The best way to know your heart rate zones is to purchase a heart rate monitor and read about how to use them in the Articles section.
