Cardio and Gaining Muscle

Question: I'm a 22 year old male who recently started weight training. I'm trying to build some muscle, but I also enjoy running, swimming and other cardio excercises. I'm pretty scrawny right now and want to add some mass, but not fat. The trainer at the gym told me to eat often, lay off the cardio and weight train hard. What do you think? Heavy weights or lighter weights? And how often should I be weight training? Thanks Colin

Answer: Colin, Don't give up cardio completely - your heart is your most important muscle. Otherwise, your trainer's advice is fine. Heavier weights will add size to your muscles. Work out with weights three times per week, full body. Make sure to stretch well after working out.
