How Accurate are Fat Loss Scales
When It Comes to Fat Loss, The Scales Do Lie!
by Donnie Whetstone
In opening this article one thing must be made perfectly clear. There is a distinct difference between weight loss and fat loss. Weight loss is the arbitrary reduction in body fat, lean body mass and body fluids. Fat loss is simply the reduction of body fat. Both of these elements have instruments to measure their progress. Fat loss uses various instruments; skin fold calipers, anthrometric taping and bio impedance, are just a few. Weight loss uses the scale. We cannot accurately use instruments that measure fat loss in order to measure weight loss. Like wise, we cannot accurately use instruments that measure weight loss in order to measure fat loss. This is why when it comes to fat loss the scales do lie!
Weight loss vs. fat loss, which is better?
Does weight loss and fat loss reap the same benefits and if not which is better? This is a good question. Weight loss and fat loss does not reap the same benefits. Weight is an unreliable and deceptive indicator of our fitness level. An individual can lose weight and actually increase their body fat percentage or gain weight and decrease their body fat percentage. A true indicator of fitness levels is the amount of fat vs. lean body mass. In cases of extreme overweight and chronic obesity, make no mistake about it, weight loss has its benefits. When it comes to achieving high levels of fitness, fat loss is the clear choice.
Tell tale signs of fat loss.
There are a number of tell tale signs indicating fat loss. The most profound sign is muscle clarity or definition. The leaner we are the more prominent our muscles become. For most of us acquiring muscle definition can be similar to watching a large pot of cold water come to a boil. It seems to take forever. A more practical sign is through clothing either by size reduction or how we look and fit in the same size. Clothing sizes can change drastically with little change in the scale. Tell tale signs are instrumental in keeping us focused and motivated, especially for those who must insist on using a scale. They offer a valuable second opinion to an undesirable scale reading. Before taking out frustrations on a cheesecake, try putting on some clothes.
Realizing the importance of lean to fat ratios, some scales come with body fat measuring devices. Before using these devices, find out what they’re body fat standards are for excess and acceptable levels since there is no universal standard. Check to determine if there are preparations required before testing. Avoid interchanging testing methods and equipment. Different test readings are common between testing methods.
